What Fulton County's Reparations Report Teaches Us About Reading Numbers; Or: why every civics classroom in America should be studying this document, just not for the reasons its authors intended.
One calculation I would like to see, is if reparations of this magnitude were paid out to every black person in the US, how much a cheeseburger would set you back?
When someone claims that a single county owes $900 billion in reparations, debunking it doesn't require careful analysis. It's like someone claiming their climate model has found the average temperature in that county is 5,000 degrees -- a figure so utterly, stupidly inflated that a single glance at reality is enough to blow it out of the water.
“… what would enslaved people have earned if they had been paid white manual laborers’ wages?”
Or, maybe cite an example or two of a white manual laborer whose current descendants are worth billions because he shrewdly invested his excess income.
And all of this assumes that these people stayed in that spot, built a life in that spot, and their life was highly successful, as you said, continuing through each generation and despite each national setback. In the one gentlemen‘s will, they had to leave the country to get the money. And in that circumstance there would be zero investment or family left here in America to calculate an income or reparation on. So even if the son had not broken the terms of the will, if the people had received their inheritance, it would’ve only happened upon leaving the country.
